How many treatments will I need?

This can vary for each patient. The number of visits is dependent on the following:

• The symptoms you have
• The time you have had these symptoms
• How much of your chiropractor's advice you follow

Your first visit

Your first visit will usually last about 45 minutes to an hour. The initial assessment is to identify the underlying nature of your condition.

You will be asked for various information not just about the pain or complaint that may have brought you but about your past health history. If necessary, a physical examination will be carried out.

If, following your examination, chiropractic is not considered suitable for you - you will be referred to your GP or relevant specialist.

Chiropractic treatment

Before your treatment begins your chiropractor will report back to you on the findings of their examination. They will explain what is wrong and what treatments can be considered.

Each patient is given an individual treatment plan. This plan will outline the chiropractor's recommendations for treatment and the goals for treatment when indicated. Treatment can proceed once your consent has been given.

Chiropractic treatment mainly involves safe and, often gentle, specific spinal manipulation to free joints in the spine or other related areas that are not moving properly.

Apart from manipulation, your chiropractor may use a variety of techniques including ice, heat, Ultrasound, exercise and acupuncture as well as advice about posture and lifestyle.
